The hat lady – quilt illustration

OK, it's interesting, it's not predictable, it's not my favorite, but I've enjoyed the experiment.

That's what creativity is about. In making this quilt I've discovered a technique I want to take further.

But that technique will come later…..

I decided to write directly on the quilt. It balances with the illustration.

The dyed cheesecloth was laid on the quilt and I quilted over the top of it. I used dark blue thread for the darker  background and a lighter blue for the rest of the quilt. I used two feet. The open toed accu foot for the main part of the quilting, but at times I needed to do some free motion quilting in the smaller parts of the quilt in and around the illustration.

The idea of the quilt was to make it an illustration. I think I've achieved that. The woman came out well.

The dyed cheesecloth looks like daubs of water color and is soft to blend with the quilting illustration and the quilting lines follow the lines of the blue brush strokes.

The quilting follows the free brush stokes and doesn't compete but compliments.

You really did achieve the look of paint daubs with the cheesecloth. Very clever technique. I can’t wait to see more.

Oh yes, this all come together nicely!
Words add just the right component to the piece.
You are able to show intricate script. Have you mentioned how you stitch words (maybe I missed it)? I’m thinking it must be a result of your Janome with free motion foot.
    thanks for sharing.

I LOVE the new technique you have developed. I too was wondering how you do the script. I can’t say enough about how much I admire your work.
