Fabric shopping in New Delhi.

This is still part of yesterdays post.
I’m almost overwhelmed with the color and the sheer beauty of the fabrics we’ve seen. I’m not surprised, but when it does actually happen its a bit hard to take it all in at once.

We mentioned to Anju that we would like to have some clothes made.
Bless her, “Not a problem”,she said “but first you must buy fabric”.

After our sumptuous lunch we found ourselves in Nelli silk sarees.
Its 3 floors of pure fabric bliss. The ground floor was crowded with people, Men, waiting patiently, women of all ages and children Every counter in the long bright room was full of the most beautiful color fabric bolts.

Most of the women were wearing saris, they look elegant and fresh the fabric flows with grace. A bit different to a Western cotton shirt and pants. The criteria for sari wearing appears to be that the brighter the better.
I needed to touch the fabric, to examine it in detail and to imagine… just imagine.

My Sister Jan, is she really buying orange?

Anju skillfully guided us through the process and bargained a no nonsense deal.
What a blessing. None of us were going to buy a sari length… but carried by the emotion of the fabric, we all did in the end.

The ground floor was fabric lengths and the next floor was just for Saris.

These were the fabric I bought and theres a couple of scarves in there too.
Most of it is on the way to the tailors.
Once again, thank you Anju.
At one stage, Luana and I just had to give each other a hug we were so excited.
The whole process took a couple of hours and then we left to find a coffee shop and right next door to the shop was yet another famous Sari house… so of course we had to go in.
The next stop was Dilli Haat a local craft market. The craftsmen who are registered with D.C.Handicrafts are the ones who are eligible to find a place there. The stalls selling handicrafts are allotted on a rotational basis to craftsmen who come from all corners of the vast & varied land of India at nominal payment for a period of 15 Days. This ensures that visitors get to buy authentic wares at prices that have not been inflated by high maintenance costs.
I purchased my Kantha embroidery there. Ilove the design and color and its embroidered on the finest silk. It measures about 8 foot X 5 foot.
Kantha is still the most popular form of embroidery practised by rural women. The traditional form of Kantha embroidery was done with soft dhotis and saris, with a simple running stitch along the edges. Depending on the use of the finished product they were known as Lepkantha or Sujni Kantha.

The embroidered cloth has many uses including women’s shawls and covers for mirrors, boxes, and pillows. In the best examples, the entire cloth is covered with running stitches, employing beautiful motifs of flowers, animals birds and geometrical shapes, as well as themes from everyday activities. The stitching on the cloth gives it a slight wrinkled, wavy effect. Contemporary Kantha is applied to a wider range of garments such as sarees, dupatta, shirts for men and women, bedding and other furnishing fabrics, mostly using cotton and silk.

Once again, the colors and design were astounding.. Several hours went past quickly and before we knew it darkness had descended and Anju took us to her house for a wonderful dinner…
Goodness, what a day, what an experience, how lucky are eel.

Wish I was there rather than here waiting to have an abscess drained. It sure helps to have a local in those shops. They all love silk but did you get some nice light weight cottons as well?
