The best quilting classroom in the world.

5.00 am and the alarm will go off in half an hour. Of course it’s still pitch dark and the temperature is only in the 60’s.  So different to last weeks heat of Thailand. The contrast couldn’t be more different and this Tutor finds her brain a little confused at times. However, I think the jet lag has gone, we’ve have more opportunity to take a short cat nap every now and then and recover.

I’m writing this in the silence of our room. Our real adventures in creativity begin today and we have a small intimate group to work with. Our class room has probably one of the best views in the world.

We overlook the immense veld from a small walk out balcony in our room. Our hotel is owned by the Aga Khans family. The Mara Serena boutique eco-hotel in the heart of the Masai Mara National Reserve on the border with Tanzania,  you cant fault the location on a ridge with a magnificent view down over the plains of the Masai Mara bush.

We flew in on a single engine plane a Cessna Canadien. It allowed us wonderful views of the immense country below.

It’s just a 45 minute flight from Nairobi and it was quite smooth. I was sitting behind the pilots, a  young Kenyan man and Woman and got a bird’s eye view of the controls. It was certainly a unique trip, specially the in service. The pilot passed a bowl of mints in a plastic container back along the seats stating quite proudly, “in service snacks” and the landing was equally exciting as we wheeled over the dry brown countryside, past herds of elephants and zebras.

I’ts a world away from my studios at home and the world of quilting, but here we are with quilting in mind and this is going to be the most unusual class adventure.DSC08909

By the time we went out on safari in the late afternoon, the clouds began to kiss the earth and the light was soft and warm and the experience of a lifetime began.

  1. Yes, a beautiful area to be in a quilting class. I have been to the Masai Mara Game Reserve and loved every minute of it.
