The gift of time out for an artist on the road.

I’m sitting in a small cafe in Ruidoso. The cornerstone Bakery Cafe. There is a hum of conversation that occasionally erupts into quiet laughter.
It seems that most people are holiday makers escaping the heat of the plains and enjoying the majesty
of the pine forests and the associated activities.

The cabinet in front of me is packed with pies of all FullSizeRender 4description and I will give in and sample a slice of the Lemon Meringue.

Delicious.

This is my third week on the road. The hard work is finished and was very successful. Our annual road trip ‘Thelma and Louise’ – Well actually ‘Lisa and Pam’ is over and my head is still buzzing with the images that we saw and the things we experienced.

If I’m not actively busy I begin to feel that I should be home with my family or working on my major project. It’s always been that way when I’m traveling. Downtime often feels like I’m living in excess, but it’s a little difficult to actually go from one event to another time wise when you are 17,000 miles from home.

I have been a given an amazing gift, a time alone in a small cabin in the mountains and it’s a new experience for me.

In a few days I will travel to Santa Fe to cover the Santa Fe Folk Art Festival. Artists come from all over the world to share their talents with us in the United States. The joy is that I will be with Miss Lisa and her daughter and Grand Daughter and Miss Rose and we will sample the ambience of Santa Fe.

There is so much to see and do and then I fly home to my Husband and bambinos for a short time and ‘back to the Bayeux’.

We have a class a week after I get home and a few other busy events. Thank goodness for the help of my PA Miss Roz.

Your posts tug at my heart & head…. I feel parallels…visits to the bakery during our spring trip to Ruidos & almost getting to the Folk Festival on my calendar for this year. Enjoy every day of your adventure & it’s quiet moments as well.

Connie, I will share the images and the videos as they present themselves at the festival. We leave tomorrow for 6 days in Santa Fe, a couple of days back in Alamogordo and then home for a few weeks then it all begins again, India, Dubai, Nepal, USA.. Caribbean… pretty exciting really.

    Pam,
Just love travelling with you, for some reason I can’t post a comment on your fb posts, but just wanted you to know how much you inspire me … I am ‘learning to see’ ..not very good at the drawing bit but look at your work, think ‘wow’ and carry on. Enjoy the sunshine and warmth ..from a very wet UK !

Glenys, sorry I don’t know why you cant send a message on FB, but thanks for this one. Its nice to visit with you across the miles. Just keep scribbling each day and eventually it becomes easier.

Thank you for your post! I feel the same way when on vacation, as someone who for so long believed that my worth was directly proportional to my productivity. As I have grown older, and through lots of personal development, I now know that our worth is inherent, yet it still takes me a day or two to decompress. It’s nice to know I’m not alone!

    Your work is beautiful!

Thank you so much, yes, it’s one of those quirky things we put upon ourselves. “Distance and difference are the secret tonic of creativity. When we get home, home is still the same. But something in our mind has been changed, and that changes everything.” —Jonah Lehrer

That sounds heavenly! I know what you mean about downtime, but the mind and body needs it to become restored. I spend 5 months training with an amazing group of friends, who become family over that time. It ends with an amazing 4 day weekend of races and support. Then we come back to “normal” life. It is a difficult adjustment, but I need to remind myself that some downtime is required before heading into the next round of races.

Indeed. I don’t know how you do it… My Daughter in Law has two little people, runs 15 lm each morning before work, she’s a busy lawyer and runs and wins marathons….. gees louise. I don’t know how she does it either.
