She lives in a small 200 year old house high up on the side of mountain. I have no idea how old she was, but she kindly invited us to sit on her porch and drink buffalo buttermilk.
She had a small boy with her and we gave him 10 rupees to go buy candy. (10 cents) The lady in red next to her decided she needed to have 10 cents too and whipped it out of the little boys hands. So we gave him more.
Her clothing was traditional and hand woven. I wonder if she made it herself. Most of the women in that village wore red and green. I’m not too sure of the significance of the color.
Both of the women wore Ikat woven skirts.
There were two buffalos in the yard. The smell was quite pungent, but I imagine you would get used to it. The ladies were keen to share a calendar picture with us, it depicted a huge landslide where many people were killed in 2015. It happened just meters from their house, in the small valley you see beside the white house.
It was really hot and sunny but under the veranda it was quite cool.
Visitors don’t come to this town, its quite a distance from Pokhara but we requested a visit to a non tourist area. They were trying to take us to an old town where we could see how people lived, but the town was on the tourist trek and the houses turned into hotels. We were so lucky to have been able to visit this one.

It is an education to see how advanced the Nepalese people are in fabric and how much they like COLOUR. We wear so much black here.

Wonderful photos and story. Back in 1977 I trekked and climbed for six-weeks in Nepal living at 16,000 to 18,000 feet for over four of those weeks. We trekked in a area where European Whites were never seen, and being of Swedish-Norwegian decent I was the only person of eight in my group with blue eyes and blonde hair. You cannot imagine how many of the villagers touched my hair and closed into my face to view my eye color. Walking eight hours a day with heavy pack, trying to eat all I could and the altitude I lost 25-pounds in six-weeks, the BEST ever ‘diet’ I had ever been on as a 27-year old woman! And, my climbing trip to Nepal and meeting all the very hard working Nepalese and Tibetians was better than the views!
.A very inspiring article. I just finished reading an opinion piece in the NYT by Ruth Gade Ginsburg. It was interesting about two strong women, different, but both with a message.
