I have an iPad Pro and I use it in a number of ways for my art, designs and the planning of my Designs.
- I’m going to show you how I used it for some of the illustrations for my Bayeux Project.
- I photocopied the image I wanted to reproduce.
- This is a screen shot of the process.
- I use Adobe sketch, an iPad and an iPhone application.
- On opening the application you will find two small squares on the left hand side. One has sketch layer written on it, the other has background.
If you press the + sign, it adds the image layer. By pressing the image layer box it directs you to add the photo. You need an image and a sketch layer.
A box comes up on the screen Image layer and if you slide the Opacity dot to about the middle of the blue line, you should be able to see an image although faint and in reality you have a digital tracing paper over the image.
I chose to use a black pen, size 3.0. If you press on the pen, it will show you the color and a size for the line. Its sort of like a little circle with a dot in it and the size.
This is what it looks like, I carefully trace over the image.
When I’ve finished the drawing I slide the opacity dot completely to the left. It takes the background image out of the picture and leaves you with the drawn outline.
You can see where I’ve pressed harder on the 2nd horse on the right. The pen is quite sensitive.
I can painter color it in with the implements on the left, but I want to ‘fill’ it in so I use another application.
The problem with ‘filling’ is that if you don’t have the lines ‘join’ or ‘end’ you end up with an entire piece being filled with color rather than the small piece you require.
You can save the image to your photos. and I always save it before I color, so that I can maintain a base piece of art. I could watercolour it, or color it with pencil at a later date.
I have another application called ‘pigment’ and I transferred the image into there and began filling with color.
I’ve used a particular color palette that I designed for the Quilt. I’ll show that technique in another blog when I’ve finished this picture.
This is another image in process, but its just a pencil drawing.

Wow. That explanation was so interesting. I smiled when I read about you tracing and filling in. Whenever I have to sign na electronic screen, it looks like chicken scratch. My signature on my driver’s licence looks like something signed by a four year old. 💖😂. I can’t wait to see the final result. Thanks for sharing 💖

Yes, there is an app called pigment. It’s one of the top colouring apps. In fact if you look under adult colouring books you will find it. I use it to ‘fill’ my drawing.
Thank you so much for sharing, I have only a couple of apps on my iPad and not sure how to use them, this a big help. I have taken a PS Elements on line course and this helped to make this look simple to do although I think the tracing will take some practice. Need to go look for the apps.

I have an ipad and downloaded Adobe Sketch. Haven’t had time to really get into it yet. Thanks for your description above. I did a sketch of my niece’s beautiful chickens, but sadly a fox got to them. The sketch which I added watercolour to turned out quite good. It’s a very nifty program. Saving up for the new Apple pencil to use with it. My current pencil 53 didn’t quite do the job.
Lorraine you will find that the iPad pencil is 100 percent more efficient.
Omgarsh! I was so excited to find your post on your Bayeux project! I am a theatrical costume instructor at a community college in Oregon and just returned from France where I saw the tapestry! I was thinking about teaching my intro students hand appliqué and want to use images from the tapestry. After doing a search I found your site showing how you import a screenshot into the iPad sketch and create your own patterns! Brilliant! Thank you for sharing your skills so generously! I’m am so excited to start this project with my students!
