Finally on the plane.
The months of preparation are over and if I’ve forgotten something I just have to make do. Yes, there has been a time when I forgot my underwear, and then I forgot cords, I forgot medicines and a few other important things.
Of course one just has to go and replace the item when you arrive at your destination, however, the undies were a bit difficult to purchase in a place like Thailand or Kenya !
I walk a fine line in those preparation months. Balancing my role of Mother and house Frau and maintaining my identity as a Tutor/Presenter. Realistically, the family don’t understand the measure of my involvement. How can you explain it.? Grandma teaches Quilting….
About 30 people in our family need me at home and 100’s of people around the world have invested huge sums of money to attend class with me. The pressure is immense, I try not to let it take over my being, but I don’t think I would be human if I didn’t worry. At times, I’m preoccupied and forget to finish a sentence or even a conversation.
In the mean time I’ve been maintaining my adventures with my major project. ‘The Bayeux Tapestry to Quilt’. I toyed at bringing it with me to work on, but what if my case went missing, somehow I gave in and the research for the book and illustrations will just have to do. In a way its an enforced Bayeux meditation.
After a supper with family and friends last night, I checked the cases in the corner… all was in order. My little dog hates those cases. He hides under his blanket. I held him more than usual yesterday, it will be a miracle if he is still with us when I return. He’s an immense age, deaf and almost blind and looks forever like a little old man. 20 years of shared life has been wonderful. He’s just plain sweet.
I rarely sleep much the night prior to leaving for a big trip. CNN was informing me of the life changing events in the USA and I seem to stare into space even more.
I think a little of the heaviness lifts when I get on the plane. I begin to concentrate on different things. Work mode. I’m meeting family in LA. A new and unique experience for me. I hope we can walk on the beach, chat and visit a nice restaurant. Four year old Jaya is beyond excited. We only have two days and then I get on a plane again and meet my group for our journey to Costa Rica.
18 hours or so and You arrive in LA.
As someone you’ll be teaching as you travel the US, I so appreciate the sacrifices you make at home to make this possible. I think we forget that sometimes; travel is enjoyable, enlightening, fulfilling … but none of that, when you’re tired and homesick. I wish you safe travels and easy times and look forward to meeting you in Indianapolis.

‘Geraldine’ class in Houston and loved your stories and art. Sometimes our life drives do cause us guilt and strife and yet if not doing what drives and excites us, do we not just become old? Though past official retirement age, I am still active and totally engaged in my field (medicine) and I garden and quilt to my heart’s delight when not working. You inspire me to continue to do what keeps me sharp and totally engaged with life. Thank you!
