I don’t have much time home in my studio so I need to work through the new ideas that have taken shape during the past year of travel.
I do a number of drawings in my sketch book as I travel, mainly on the plane to be honest.
This is one I did when I was in Tuscany a few years ago. The narrow, tall buildings hung precariously onto top of the sculptured hills.
So I decided to do something with the drawings this year.
“Have you been to Tuscany?” came about.
I drew it first.
Then I began stitching free motion with the sewing machine.
The important thing in this image s to stitch the background quite intensively and you can see in this image how the quilt begins to shrink as the quilting is done.
But hours of experience tells me all will be flat once the stitching is complete.
OK, there are lots of tips and tricks to go through to get the quilt to this stage… but you could leave the quilt at this stage once you’ve done this.
However I wanted a particular look and I coloured the image permanently with 4 different genres of illustration.
But I don’t give those techniques away …….. sorry. You need to come to class to learn that.
What gorgeous work, Pam! Beautifully done.
Thank you.
Thanks for sharing the tease of how you created this little gem. Happy New Year Pam
Pretty neat! I can’t wait to see the finished product.
Love your work, Pam! This is a sweet image!
Hi Pam, I am wondering, when you quilt on your sewing machine what weight of batting are you using, if any? Or maybe you just have another layer of fabric between the front and the backing?
I use warm and natural cotton batting.
Thanks for getting back to me Pam. When you are free-style quilting, even in straight lines, are your feed dogs dropped?
I never drop the feed dogs, I leave them up all the time….. For everything.
Thanks Pam for letting me know
Love this. But I can’t draw for toffee 🤨. Wish I could.
Well, I bet you can trace and color in… that’s what you do.
I wish I could take a class but alas I am miles away and probably money short.
